The Secret Drawing Ingredient by urban-barbarian, journal
The Secret Drawing Ingredient
If you're an artist of any kind it's extremely important to hone your craft and technical abilities. After all, the better you draw and the better you are at mastering the drawing tools you use - the easier it is to convey your unique message for public consumption.
But how important is technical ability, really? Obviously, it's very important. Understanding anatomy, light and shadow and perspective are key to solid drawing. It's important to always be improving in those departments. It's also very important to master the tools you use to draw with. Learning to render or color professionally can only increase your appeal to both fans an
My career has been an absolute joyride so far. I'm extremely thankful to be able to make a living by doing what I love.
What deviantART has done for the art community is absolutely extraordinary and I don't know what I would do without it.
It has been an integral part of my growth as an illustrator. So thank you and happy birthday!

Francisco was one of the reasons why I joined DA. His work instantly caught my eye when I was young. I finally met Francisco at the Chicago Comic & Entertainment Expo this year. Such a nice dude. Can't thank him enough for be
I get quite a few messages here on DA with various questions and requests. I don't have time due to work and family to answer all of them individually like I would like so I think a handy-dandy FAQ is in order. This way maybe I can answer a question before it's even asked and/or have a journal I can easily direct people to. So here we go!
Q: Can you give me any tips on how to draw/color,paint/whatever better?
A: The quick and easy answer is that there aren't any secrets to being able to draw well. I know it's not what people want to hear and everyone is looking for a magic trick that will instantly make them a better artist. The truth is th

A New Wind Lifts Storytelling
First imagined as a bedtime tale for his son by Kenneth Grahame in 1908, The Wind in the Willows has remained in the top twenty children’s stories ever since. But things have been getting weird out in the Willows, as the new comic on deviantART, Weirding Willows, will attest to.
Badger, Mole, Ratty and Mr. Toad are back… but they’re joined by Alice, Frankenstein’s Monster, Mowgli, The White Rabbit, Peter Rabbit and Benjamin Bunny as they defend the world from the Wicked Witch of the West, Doctor Moreau, the Mad Hatter, Mister Hyde and the Queen of

Comics and Donut Making
I liken the comic book making business to the life of a donut.
Allow me to explain.
Unless you're a baker, I doubt you're going to make a good donut your first time out. I mean it sounds simple enough. A donut. But it's not. When was the last time your mother made you a donut? "I know, I'll bake some donuts and bring them to the party...!" Not a lot of people can make donuts, or good ones at least. So I assume it takes some practice. Some care. Just like making a decent comic book.
So you practice and train yourself and you get to a point in your donut making expertise that you decide to make one for public consumption. You gather the i
I thought it might be interesting to talk about the thought process behind putting a cover together. As an example I'm going to use the October on sale A1 Annual.
A1 has always been an anthology book so with the talent shaping up for the book I wanted to do something that highlighted all the talent involved not just a single talent or strip. Having said that we are having an exclusive cover just for the comics direct sales market through Diamond Comics Distributors of a piece by JIM STERANKO and STANLEY ARTGERM LAU that considering the combination of the two talents makes for an impressive exception.
My first thought was to go directly to

Watcher's Feature #9 and some news
Oh, hello people! :glomp: How are you?!
Well... I'm sick... How great is that?! :grump: My ears are just a wreck and now I need to take 4 types of drugs for 8 days... UUUGGGH... I almost can't hear from my left ear... it seams that my Eustachian tubes are blocked because of the flu... :grump:
Anyway... I still couldn't go through all the comments on the last "Watcher's Feature" journal. The internet connection I use on the city I study is really slow, so I only have decent net on the weekends when I come home...
And I found out about my 3 month PM given to me by the awesome `Jules1983 (https://www.deviantart.com/jules1983) and suggested by my lovely :iconhayzy: (Hayzy... y
